Our

Approach

Our

Approach

Innovation

Our programs contribute towards increasing mental health awareness and strengthening linkage to mental health care, specifically among adolescents and adults; by leveraging traditional face-to-face approaches, digital technology, and sports to foster community mobilization, behavior change messaging, provision of integrated, inclusive, confidential, and safe mental health services.

Community Partnership

Partnership and coordination at various levels, behavioral change messaging particularly, through youth-centric, bottom-up community-driven models are core underpinnings of our programs. We are aware that it is impossible to help those most vulnerable to mental health issues without their involvement, particularly in service-poor areas. Involving the community has led to the development of community networks. These networks have been a source of support and increase the likelihood that people engage in health-enhancing behavior. Through working on the ground and being receptive to local solutions, a working mental health support and prevention program will evolve.

Youth-Friendly Center

Our center enhances access for vulnerable young people to integrated, inclusive, confidential, and safe mental health services through counseling support services delivered from AOLAT’s dedicated youth friendly drop-in center – “My Mental Health, My Health Booths.”

AOLAT’s drop-in center is a bright and comfortable environment where youth can access counseling support services from trained youth counselors, including survivors of mental health problems. The center doubles as space where adolescents can have unhindered access to informational materials on mental health services via the drop-in centers dedicated cybercafé wing.

This wing works as a vocational and empowerment medium through which youth can access vocational and career-related information addressing some of the economic challenges affecting them.

Young people can gather to relax, network and, meet other community members in these drop-in centers, and also; hold social events and bi-weekly support group sessions to facilitate networking and experiences and knowledge sharing on mental health matters. Survivor volunteer youth who have overcome or have derived coping strategies to manage their mental health challenges are recruited as “peer support champions.” This cohort constitutes part of the core project team. They support through facilitation of the support group sessions in the drop-in center: and join the advocacy and community sensitization teams during field visits.

Gender Equality Considerations

In addition to ensuring that localized and context-specific approaches are adopted and leveraged, our programs ensure gender equality considerations are taken into account at the design, implementation, and evaluation stages through the inclusion; of gender-specific markers at these various levels

Adult Support Programs

Navigating mental health solo can be difficult. Our qualified staff acts as a support and guide for those on their way to recovery and resilience development. We offer support through individualized treatment plans in needed areas such as drug and alcohol abuse or dependence, psychological, vocational training and support, educational assistance, and physical health. With treatment plans focused on needed areas and personalized support given by qualified staff, individual growth is achieved as consumers work their treatment plans. We also offer support through self-help groups in conjunction with staff support.

Having one-on-one support, knowing that someone is there to assist when needed, provides comfort and courage to take the steps necessary for recovery. At AOLAT, we offer that not just for youth but those adults most vulnerable in the community. Ones seeking to succeed but aren’t quite sure the path that should be taken. We are here to help.

Family Involvement

Studies have shown that family involvement in treatment programs where the family is acting as a support to see their loved ones recover and succeed, those in treatment are more likely to work their treatment program and see success. AOLAT involves families in the treatment of their loved ones by providing educational and support services to the family directly or through community referrals should such services be necessary. As families educate, recover, and grow themselves through services such as counseling, their loved ones involved in our programs, will have a safe and supportive environment to return home to as they work on recovering and managing their mental health challenges.

For minors and those that are unable to care for themselves, our licensed clinical staff, through assessment and in collaboration with the individual and through the proper consent of a parent, legal guardian, primary caretaker, or other person designated by the individual, develops an individualized treatment plan for the consumer.
